from January 24-26, 2012, Aixtooling GmbH will again present the latest developments for the precision molding of glass optics at one of the most important photonics trade fairs world wide - the Photonics West 2012 in San Francisco.

Like last two years Aixtooing will again participate at the German Pavilion, a joint booth representing the optical industry of the Federal republic of Germany. For the seventh time, Germany is represented at the Photonics West with a national Pavilion hosting 53 German exhibitors, showing high-tech products made in Germany. This is the highest number of German exhibitors at a joint booth at a Photonics fair worldwide. Please find us at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California, USA. The German Pavilion is in North hall and is listed under booth no. 4601-36.

Aixtooling presents examples from mold manufacturing and system integration for the precision glass molding process wit a specia focus on highly complex micro optics. Examples are molds for collimation optics, lens arrays and even free form optics. But also for conventional round spheres or aspheres Aixtooling is offering new solutions.

15-strong team Aixtooling turns out at the bowling alley as a great team

Aixtooling participated successfully at the traditional bowling evening 2010 at the Fraunhofer IPT (Department of Optics and Precision Engineering). Although the winner's trophy in both the single and in the team competition was missed, unfortunately, the large team was characterized by a homogeneous and strong performance with some outstanding individual results. David Kuschka and Daniel Roth occupied even in the general individual classification places 2 and 3 and were able to celebrate a place on the podium.

We thank the Fraunhofer IPT for the invitation to attend and congratulate the deserving winners.

In October 2010, the European research project on precision glass moulding of high-end optics, Production4µ, has been finished with the contribution of Aixtooling GmbH.

In the project, the whole process- and supply chain for the production of demanding optical components such as aspheres, arrays or diffractive lenses was built up. Dr. Thomas Bergs, Managing Partner of Aixtooling GmbH, reported in Aachen about modern optics production. "Key technology for the future" is the motto for the international two day congress, which took place on October 19 and 20, 2010 in Aachen.

Aixtooling GmbH was represented by Dr. Thomas Bergs and presented the latest trends and developments in the field of modern optics production by molding technologies. The presentation that, Dr. Bergs has hold in Aachen, is titled "Optics Production for Innovative Application" and is availible to download for interests.

The International Colloquium Optics 2010, which takes place every two years, was organized by Fraunhofer IPT. About 20 papers by well-known experts have formed the general program around technological innovations, new applications and perspectives in field of optics and photonics. The agenda has been completed by a guided visit to Fraunhofer IPT's shop floor. Aixtooling facilities as part of Fraunhofer IPT's shop floor have also been open to visitors.

Moore offers new Precision Glass Molding Machine

New machine tool development from Moore Nanotechnology Systems LLC. One of the first machines is now installed at Fraunhofer IPT, Aachen, Germany.

Moore Nanotechnology Systems - Glass Press Molding GPM

At the Optatec 2010 trade fair in Frankfurt, Germany, a new machine tool technology for the precision molding of optical glass has been presented. Besides the well known ultra precision turning and grinding machines the American machine tool supplier Moore Nanotechnology Systems LLC now offers the first precision glass molding device - called GPM.

The development by Moore can be seen as a milestone for the replicative optics production because now several suppliers commercially offer glass molding machines word-wide.

The concept of the new development follows a modular approach and can be adjusted to the needs of mass production as well as small and medium lot size production. The user is additionally enabled to simulate the glass molding procedure by a Finite Element Method (FEM) package. In detail the machine tool is characterized by the following features:

Single chamber precision glass molding machines with dia. 140 mm mold systems
Maximum Pressing Force 25 kN
Maximum Heating Temperature 800°
PC based motion controller that operates in either position or force control mode with integrated heating and cooling loops
Windows based front end with user friendly touch screen to program the machine
Molding chamber capable of operating under vacuum or an inert gas environment

One of the first molding machines of this type has been installed at the Fraunhofer IPT in Aachen, Germany and will be used for further process development. The mold (system) technology from Aixtooling can be also applied for this new machine tool. Aixtooling becomes Service Provider

Isothermal Precision Glass Molding

Aixtooling GmbH, Toshiba Machine Corp., and Sojitz Europe PLC and Sojitz Machinery Corp. conclude an after-sales service agreement for services involving GMP systems technology (high-precision optical glass mold press machine).

The service agreement states that Aixtooling GmbH will be offering service and repair services for the European customers of Toshiba Machine Corp. This will utilize Aixtooling employees' many years of experience with Toshiba molding presses. This experience will be extended by means of special training units.

In case of problems or errors in production operations, European customers can inform Aixtooling GmbH as the initial contact using a hotline. Trained employees of the Aachen company will then handle communications with the Japanese machine manufacturer, or coordinate subsequent actions. Depending on the problem, a case-by-case decision can be made whether Japanese technicians are needed on site for the troubleshooting.

The service agreement also includes regular maintenance work on GMP machines that end users cannot or do not want to carry out themselves. Various machine components that experience tells must be rotated out are already available in the Aixtooling warehouse, and can be installed quickly when needed. This procedure provides the users of the precision molding process with significant time savings.

Aixtooling strengthens its quality management

Daniel Roth

Dipl.-Ing. (FH) B. Eng. Daniel Roth will start on November 2nd, 2009 as Aixtooling's Quality Manager.

Daniel Roth finished his studies in mechanical engineering ath the Aachen Technical University (FH) in October 2009. He was employed at the Aixtooling GmbH as student researcher since the foundation in the year 2005. Hence, he is well informed about all relevant work flows within the company. Within his diploma thesis Daniel Roth has developed a new concept for a comprehensive production control system for the process chain of precision glass molding. From November 2, 2009 Daniel Roth is full time employed at Aixtooling and is responsible for Quality Management.

The Forschungsvereinigung Feinmechanik, Optik und Medizintechnik e.V. (Research Union for Precision Engineering, Optics, and Medical Technology) is holding this year's member conference on October 13, 2009, at the Aesculap Akademie in Berlin.

One contribution to the event will be a presentation of the results of the European research project Production4µ, in which Aixtooling GmbH plays a leading role.
Starting at 3:00 PM, there will also be a project workshop in which the research subjects involving precision molding of optical glass presented in a dialog with the audience will be examined in more detail. This workshop will take place in addition to the conferences, starting at 3:00 PM.

VDI Workshop on December 1-2, 2009, on the subject of replicative optical fabrication

On December 1 and 2, 2009, VDI is planning a project workshop in Düsseldorf during which, among other things, the research results for the European research project "Production4µ" will be presented.

Aixtooling GmbH will participate in the workshop with its own presentation on the subject of precision molding of optical glass. The workshop is scheduled to start at 2:00 PM and will end at 5:00 PM on the second day. The venue is the VDI building at VDI-Platz 1 in 40736 Düsseldorf. The following subjects are to be covered:

potential and implementation options of micro-optics
production-appropriate design
materials
molding tools and machines
processes
measurement and quality assurance

"3DOptics" - Milestone at BMBF-project has been reached

The BMBF collective project "3DOptics" - which Aixtooling GmbH will be coordinating - has reached an important milestone. A special free-form optic to reduce beam loss in laser optical systems was molded in the first iteration and is now being tested in the application.

Since January 1, 2008, Aixtooling GmbH is working with seven other project partners on the BMBF research project 3DOptics. The goal is to qualify the process chain of precision molding for the manufacture of highly complex free-form optics, if possible, molded on both sides.
The initial milestone after 1.5 years of project time specified the molding of demonstration glass optics that already had a complex, rotationally asymmetrical surface. The ingeneric company plans to integrate this type of phase plate into diode laser systems to avoid the beam loss resulting from the use of crossed cylinder lenses.

The demonstration optic was presented for the first time during the milestone meeting held at Ceartizit Horb GmbH. Aixtooling was involved in the implementation, both in tool design and in tool hard finish processing.

Aixtooling GmbH moves into new offices in the Fraunhofer IPT building complex

By moving to the new pavilion construction at Fraunhofer IPT, Aixtooling GmbH will be expanding its personnel growth options. At the same time, however, cooperation with the Aachen research institute will be continued and even strengthened. The new offices and the modern conference rooms in the vicinity of the production areas provide our employees with very good working conditions. We are happy to have this opportunity to briefly introduce the new options to our customers.

Bernd Bresseler will be the Managing Director of Aixtooling GmbH, focusing on the areas of production and marketing. Guido Pongs will also be Managing Director and oversee the R&D department and Engineering.

In addition to Dr. Thomas Bergs, Aixtooling GmbH has appointed two additional founding members as managing directors. Bernd Bresseler, who has primarily coordinated tooling fabrication at Aixtooling GmbH, will now also manage the production and marketing of the company.

Guido Pongs, who will continue to contribute his expertise in tool design and the molding process, will also be managing R&D activities and engineering.

By appointing these new managing directors, Aixtooling GmbH hopes to gain more flexibility as well as a strengthening and more focused alignment of the corporate divisions.

Community weekend on a traditional sailing ship - crossing the Ijsselmeer in a flat-bottomed ship

The extended team of Aixtooling GmbH took to the water to show how to be a good crew. On board, many maneuvers were necessary. Without the cooperation of individuals, a ship like this cannot be sailed. We would like to thank our old ship, the "Nieuwe Zorg", our skipper Alfred, and seaman Maurizio, who taught us quite a few things.
